2018 Cybersecurity & Privacy Seminar

KMK Law hosted the 2018 Cybersecurity & Privacy Seminar on Wednesday, April 18 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, Hall of Mirrors, 3rd Floor. At the seminar KMK law discussed GDPR compliance strategies; present best practices on Information Governance to help protect against data breaches and cyber attacks; and shared recent developments in litigation and cyber trends. Presenters also spoke about the developing field of blockchain and cryptocurrency.

The seminar was developed for business owners, executives and those in senior positions in Information Governance, ComplianceRisk Management, Human Resources, Legal andor Information Technology.

The event was free of charge, and we encouraged guests to bring hisher team members charged with cybersecurity issues.

11:30 a.m. — Registration & Lunch

12:00 p.m. — General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): Updated Compliance and Planning Strategies

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take full effect on May 25, 2018. Every business needs to assess whether the GDPR applies to any or all parts of its business; and if it does, you need to be taking steps now to prepare for compliance with this sweeping and highly technical framework. This presentation will provide an updated analysis of GDPR, discuss its potential application, and provide action steps for establishing compliance. This presentation will also talk about other pending cyber legislation in Congress, New York, and other countries around the world as part of a discussion of global compliance.

12:45 p.m. — Data Breach Response Practical Steps

This presentation will cover the 6 phases of incident response and what a company can expect during each of these phases.  High level topics include decisions that need to be made, who to call and when to call them, and how to communicate with your people during an impactful incident.  This presentation will also discuss how to prepare ahead of time using a tabletop exercise and employee training.

1:45 p.m. — Information Governance, Incident Response Plans, Breach Protocol, and Data Policies Panel

Joe and Chris will lead a panel discussion on implementation of Information Governance plans and policies. The panel will talk about best practices for data mapping, data retention and destruction policies, employee training and employee manuals,  Incident Response Plans and Data Breach protocols, and EDiscovery procedures.  We will also talk about industry regulations which impact these decisions.

2:15 p.m. — Update and Analysis of Current Trends in Data Breach Litigation

This presentation will focus on a survey of recent decisions in data breach and privacy class action litigation, focusing on the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Carefirst and the circuit split on standing in data breach litigation, and provide an update on multiple pending data breach and privacy cases. 

2:45 p.m. — Current Trends in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency

This presentation will be an introduction to Blockchain and Cryptocurrency legal issues and an update on emerging trends and practices in this developing area.

3:15 p.m. — Future Trends in Cyber and AI
Joe Callow, Litigation Partner, KMK Law

This presentation will look at the history of cybersecurity and discuss future trends in cybersecurity including AI, biometrics, and future, emerging cyber threats.  The presentation will also focus on the policies that drive current legislative reaction to cybersecurity and whether those policies and legislative goals will match emerging technology in the next 10-20 years as we approach the potential for singularity.
