Michael J. Burke Memorial Scholarship Established at NCCHS

August 11, 2008

Newport Central Catholic High School announced today the establishment of one of the largest fully funded scholarships in the 100 year history of the school. Through the generosity of Dennis and Lois Doyle and Harry and Linda Fath, Newport Central Catholic was thrilled to be advised of the creation of the Michael J. Burke Memorial Scholarship.

Mike Burke, a 1961 graduate of Newport Central Catholic, was the former Managing Partner of the Cincinnati law firm Keating Muething & Klekamp before his untimely death in 2001.

Mike’s son Michael J. Burke, Jr. speaking on behalf of his mother Marcia, his brother Brian and his sisters, Patricia, Jennifer and Anne, said, “When we heard the Doyle’s and the Fath’s wanted to honor my dad at NCCHS, our family was deeply touched. My dad has been gone now five years and while we think of him every day, it is heartwarming that his friends are thinking of him as well. My dad had a lot of charitable interests in his life but he always remembered NCCHS where he got his start and which launched him into his career he loved so much.”

Harry Fath said, “Mike and I attended law school together and when I went into business I sought Mike’s advice and counsel. Mike was a dynamo. He could do it all. By his example, Mike taught everyone near to him to reach deep and do more - and in the end he taught us all how to leave this world with grace and dignity. Mike’s endless optimism and can do spirit are still very much a part of all who knew him.

Bob Noll, NCCHS’ principal, said, “This scholarship will be the most sought after scholarship we have – not only because of its generous stipend but because the recipient will be associated with one of our most esteemed alumni.”

Newport Central Catholic has planned a special presentation of this Memorial Scholarship along with Michael Burke’s family and friends immediately following the school’s Opening Mass scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th, at 9:30 am in the school’s gymnasium. All are welcome to attend. If you want more information about this scholarship or would like to financially contribute to its endowment or to NCC in general, please contact NCC’s Development Office at (859) 292-0001.
